Hiking and Driving on Forest Roads

Tips for Driving Responsibly on Forest Trails

If you are planning a hiking trip, it is essential to know the regulations regarding driving in natural areas. Many zones are suffering severe degradation due to the excessive use of motor vehicles on forest trails. To help prevent further damage, here’s how you can access your routes while minimizing your environmental impact, as advised by the Valencia Hiking Club.

What Is a Forest Trail?

A forest trail is a road outside the state highway network, primarily used as an access route to forests and mountains. These paths are usually rough but navigable for appropriate vehicles. In the Valencian Community, 56% of the territory is forested, and access is regulated by the Montes Law.

Regulations for Driving on Forest Trails

Before driving on a forest trail, it is essential to be familiar with local legislation, as each autonomous community has its own rules. Some areas require prior authorization, while in others, vehicle access is completely prohibited.

In the Valencian Community, there are protected natural areas where a special permit from the Department of Environment is required.

Basic Rules for Driving on Forest Trails

  • Only use established paths. Creating new routes or fording rivers is prohibited.
  • Avoid parking on forest trails except in designated areas.
  • Do not block access – these routes are essential for emergency vehicles.
  • Always park in a "flee position" (with the front facing outward) to facilitate a quick exit in emergencies.
  • Do not use horns or play loud music to avoid disturbing local wildlife.
  • Motor vehicle convoys are limited to a maximum of 5 vehicles.
  • The maximum speed on forest trails is 30 km/h.
  • Give priority to emergency vehicles, livestock, pedestrians, and cyclists.
  • Pick up all your trash and respect nature.

Recommendations from the Valencia Hiking Club

To minimize environmental impact, experts recommend avoiding driving on forest trails whenever possible. The best alternative is to start your hike from the nearest town, thereby preventing unnecessary damage to the environment.
